A tree that has outgrown its position blocks light, overhangs a neighbour or rubs against the house. A crown reduction brings the height and spread back to something manageable while leaving a tree that still looks like a tree.
Reduction is not topping. Cuts are made back to suitable growth points so the tree can seal them and regrow naturally, keeping its shape. Cutting a crown off flat leaves large open wounds, invites decay and produces weak regrowth that becomes a worse problem in a few years. We also thin crowns to let light through, and lift them to clear a lawn, path or drive.
