A hedge is a boundary, a screen and a windbreak, and it only works while it is kept in shape. Left alone it grows out and up, goes bare at the base, takes light from the whole garden and starts causing arguments over the fence.
We cut to line and face, tapering slightly so the base gets light and stays furnished rather than going leggy. Overgrown hedges can usually be brought back hard over a couple of seasons, though how far depends on the species: yew and beech take it well, conifers such as leylandii do not. Everything is cleared and the base raked over.
