A retaining wall is doing real structural work. It holds back soil that gets much heavier when saturated, and the pressure never stops. Walls that lean or crack have almost always failed for one of two reasons: not enough foundation, or nowhere for the water to go.
We build off a foundation sized for the height and the ground, drain behind the wall with free-draining backfill and weep holes or a land drain, and tie the structure together so it works as one. Where a wall retains significant height we will tell you plainly if it needs designing rather than simply building.
